Curation Note
Alpha Contemporary is proud to present 「I need a body : Char Takagi, Maho Takahashi and Andrea Samory」from February 8 to February 22, 2025.
This exhibition presents experiences of “materiality” and “virtuality” by three artists of the same generation born in the 1990s. They are so-called digital natives or post digital natives, born and raised in an environment with the Internet and digital devices, and who have experienced the collapse of the boundaries between the virtual world and the real world.
While we feel anticipation and excitement from the experience of going beyond the limits of the real world, we also feel a sense of relief when we encounter a materiality that is virtual yet close to the real world.
In this exhibition, we presents works that visualize the feelings that the three artists have explored at the boundaries between “materiality” and “virtuality”.
Char Takagi (Japanese b. 1997) materializes the inner value of digital images.
She focuses on the way digital images change each time they are reproduced through various media. Her works embody the uniqueness of the digital image with a process of converting an image on a two-dimensional display to one on a three-dimensional canvas. She duplicates digital images multiple times and transforms the degraded images into paintings. You can experience the uniqueness of the digital image through her works.
Maho Takahashi (Japanese b. 1992) explores our unshakable presence within us, the “personality”, although it appears that we are living in an era that is different from the past due to the development of technology. We showcase some works using gold leaf, a symbol of unchanging value.
Andrea Samory (Italian b.1991) materializes virtual images and intangible forces. He focuses on the biological body in relation to the stereotypical concept of nature, and on how familiar images, when released from their idealized context, can become a mirror for collective anxieties and expectations towards the future.
His works are produced using 3D printing techniques, referring myths and human hybris and so on.
His vocabulary takes advantage of shiny, soft and colorful materials to attract the viewer into a world of natural corruption and uncanniness - provoking the ambivalent feelings of repulsion and fascination, alienation and familiarity, recognition and corruption. These are reactions to nowadays incessant flux of both dystopic and utopic information regarding global society, climate, politics, technology.
In this exhibition, you can experience the “materiality” as art visualized by each of the three artists' unique expressions and interpretations of the times. As we live in an experience where the virtual and the real overlap, we need to constantly sharpen our senses in our materialized bodies in order to explore smart ways to interact with technology.
