Curation Note
Alpha Contemporary is proud to present 「Sayuri Fukami : Backoning from the Tide, Touch of Light」from February 26 to March 5, 2025.
Sayuri Fukami (Japanese b. 1986), who was born and raised in Okinawa, uses nature and the touch of life from her birthplace as a motif for her work, which is based on the theme of energy from nature, and uses Katazome of Okinawa.
Katazome is a stencil dyeing technique dyeing with glue made from glutinous rice flour and rice bran as a dye-proofing agent.
y expressing an intangible thing using Kata, a technique that does not allow for ambiguity, she believes that new perspectives can be created.
In Okinawa, the source of Fukamizu's expression, there is an event related to the sea on March 3 of the lunar calendar. It is called “Hamaui,” in which women take a feast to the beach, dip their arms and legs in the sea, and pray for good health.
From this time on, the islands of Okinawa are filled with light and the sound of summer approaches, earlier than in other parts of Japan.
Although daytime temperatures have begun to rise, the temperature difference between morning and evening is still significant at the end of February in Tokyo. It is the time of year to take measures against the cold, but at the same time, to bring in items that will remind us of the new season.
This exhibition showcases paintings by Fukamizu, of the sea, wind, scents, light, and even invisible things of summer in Okinawa.
Reminiscent of the pleasantness of the slightly cool tide and the warmth of light, Fukamizu's works should sharpen your senses and refresh your body and soul in expectation of the coming of a new season.
Where winter is about to pass, a new season awaits. If we can call this new season “hope,” that hope can be the power to live.
